Welcome to the
Canterbury Dance Centre!

Our dance program is ideal for children to stay fit and to explore their artistic talents in a non-competitive environment.

We offer children from age 3-18 the opportunity to dance in a fun, positive, and professional environment. Our qualified, experienced instructors strive to promote self-esteem and positive self-image.  Programs are held in a safe, community-based environment and we keep tuition prices affordable for our families.

Dance styles include Tots & Toes, Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, and Hip Hop.

Last Day of Classes – Saturday, June 1, 2024

Recital Photo Day:  Sunday, May 26, 2024, starting at 12:00pm

  • A detailed schedule will be sent to you in advance. The photographer will work just like a school photographer offering for you to choose and order your photos online. For pictures, the expectation is full costume, tights, shoes, recital hair and make-up
  • Costumes have been distributed to students. It is important to keep it hung up and try to smooth out any wrinkles from packaging. Your child may comment that it is uncomfortable but this is normal! Dance costumes are typically tight and scratchy but are only worn for a short period of time. Some costumes have straps in the back where you can rip the stitch and add some length or shorten them. If there are snaps around the neck to secure the costume, please reinforce them by pinning the snaps closed with a safety pin. They typically pop open or don’t fit quite right.
  • Hair and makeup: the purpose of makeup is not to improve one’s looks rather, it is to ensure that the students face does not get washed out on stage due to the heavy lighting. Here is a video on how to do makeup for the younger students: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YYEsVyqO1s (mascara is optional, blush/red lips are highly recommended)
    • Hair: All Tots and Toes, Level 1, 2, 3 dancers will wear their hair in a bun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eyIa9XbbFs
    • Ballet 4 & 5 will have their hair in a bun just like the video.
    • All Level 4 & 5 students will wear their hair in a low ponytail with centre part (Ballet 4/5 will have centre part, low bun) Low pony tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3dPpY9Qknc
    • If the hair is too short for a bun, do your best to slick the hair back into a ponytail.
    • You will want to use a lot of hair gel and hair spray to ensure hair stays secure for the duration of the show

Special instructions:

  • Jazz Level 3 (Blue jumpsuits): The kids will wear beige dance tights (no underwear!) under the jumpsuit
  • Tap Level 2: The instructor informed me that the girls will need to wear a black bodysuit under their costume; the boys can have bare legs with their shorts and black socks (low)

Stage Rehearsal and Annual Recital: Sunday, June 2, 2024 at the Shenkman Arts Centre

  • The stage rehearsal will be in the morning (a very detailed schedule will be given to you prior to the rehearsal) at the Shenkman Arts Centre. Costumes are not required; the purpose of this rehearsal is to properly space the students, orient them to the stage, and practice with audio/lighting. It is extremely important that all students participate. Tots and Toes will not be required to participate in the stage rehearsal.
  • Level 1,2,3’s and Beginner Tap Students:
    • Please arrive at 8:00am so that we can get all of the kids organized and on stage for an 8:30am start.
    • Parents will be able to wait in the hall until their child is done rehearsing and take them home
    • Please return to the theatre for 2:00pm.
    • Drop off  your dancer at the Richcraft Theatre.  This will be the holding area and drop-off/pick-up for all junior dancers and Tots and Toes kids. On the day of the show all of the students will be supervised in the Richcraft Theatre and they will be able to watch a live stream of the recital.
    • We ask that only one parent drop-off/pick-up students in order to help with the flow.
    • Students are expected to stay until the end of the show as every student will participate in a finale performance.  There will be a short awards ceremony after the finale.  The show is approximately 2.5 hours long so you will want to pack your child water and nut free snacks (nothing messy please!)
  • Level 4 and 5 Students: Please arrive by 10:00am for stage rehearsal.
    • They can be dropped off with all of their costumes/makeup/hair supplies OR they can arrive with their hair/makeup done
    • Parents do not need to stay for the level 4/5’s stage rehearsal.
    • Please make sure your dancers have all of their supplies and a lunch/snacks. All Level 4/5’s will be in the Green Room changing area which has table and chairs where they can have their lunch and get ready for the show.
